Listen Differently; Engage Intentionally; Build Equity

Talk of inequality, diversity, disadvantage, and privilege is everywhere these days.

I believe that discussion is good, but action is better, no matter how small. We cannot create large scale change overnight and so every tiny step we make towards equity is worthwhile.

I ask my clients, and anyone who hears me speak, to listen differently.

What does that mean?

It means look past the noise, the negativity and the anger and find the place where you can hear the unheard voices.

Listen differently: discover the point at which your world meets theirs: what are they really experiencing?
Engage intentionally: what small change can you make to affect their outcomes? What is within your power and control to make yourself, or the service you provide, more accessible to underrepresented people?

The path to equity is not about vast resources or big budgets. It is about a shift in mindset. When we listen differently and engage intentionally, we see the obvious steps we can take.

I will always advocate for small, meaningful actions that represent reality, over sweeping reforms that never get true buy-in. Gradually, these small actions will create a bigger change.

Tokenistic gestures do more harm than good. I want to work with organisations and institutions who are ready to do the work, who are committed to putting actual changes in place, however small, to start an authentic journey to equity.

If you identify with this way of thinking, I’d love to hear from you.

Navigating Your New Normal

Navigating Your New Normal is part memoir and part framework. It deals with the impact of breast cancer and loss on family members as well as offer a framework to help people find their way to fulfilment in the aftermath of trauma. Bamidele shares her perspectives as a teenage caregiver, loved one as well as being a breast cancer patient herself. The 7-step framework is a practical map for people to journey from survival to thriving in their new normal journey. The encouragement is that even though life after trauma is drastically different to that enjoyed previously, it does not have to be any less fulfilling.

Claire Job

Senior Lecturer, School of Healthcare Sciences Cardiff University

I just wanted to send you an email to thank you once again for leading the HEIW leadership fellow masterclass on the subject of “Amplifying BAME Patients’ Voices: Raising Awareness of Inequities in Healthcare Provision” on the 7 December 2020.

The feedback I received following the masterclass was very positive indeed. It is so very important that our NHS leaders of the future understand the unique needs of all patient groups in particular patients from our BAME community. All our leadership fellows found the masterclass incredibly inspiring and thought provoking. A number of them approached me after the event expressing their gratitude for the wonderful session and have been moved to work more on the issues you have raised.

I very much look forward to working with you more in the future.
